Income
inequality is major problem in America. The difference between those
who are at the top of the income ladder and those who are at the
bottom is frightening. Such disparity creates an environment that can
corrode our social fabric over time. The stark differences can be
best seen in urban centers such as Chicago. A quick glance at the
this map tells the tale of sharp contrasts and a society that will be
hard to sustain in the long run.

Using this Map, the 8th grade students in Ms. Wofford's math class at Claremont Academy, located in Englewood neighborhood in Chicago, worked with artist Eden Ünlüata from C.C.A.P. -T.E.A.M (http://www.colum.edu/CCAP/Programs/Arts_Integration/TEAM/) starting by analyzing the map (see the map link above), visualized the statistical information, and created an info-graphics campaign that will plant seeds of change in their community. With this campaign the students are inviting a discussion on why such a gap exists and ask why their community hasn't had the opportunity to grow economically. Each team took a unique approach in visually representing their ideas and presented to their peers. With this blog they will further present their work to the broader community.
